Internship

Jewish, Islamic and Near Eastern Studies students also have the option of taking an internship for credit. Work completed during the internship should contribute to the student's academic or professional development. The Career Center provides assistance in locating and organizing a good internship experience, although students may also find one on their own. Students enrolling in an internship must have a faculty sponsor (normally an academic advisor). The sponsor's primary role is to ensure that requirements for credit are met and that the work is of a substantial nature commensurate with the skills of college-educated employees. Detailed supervision of the intern in his or her job is the responsibility of the intern's site supervisor.

Once you have an internship site and a faculty sponsor, a Learning Agreement form must be filled out. A copy of this must be submitted to the program, the Career Center, and the faculty sponsor. The internship shall require written work to be reviewed by the faculty sponsor, as specified in the Learning Agreement. Suggestions for written assignments include a periodic report on work activities and a brief end-of-term paper that describes the student's experience and links it to academic studies. Students may complete the work for an internship over the summer and receive credit during the following fall semester.

Academic-Credit Guidelines for L75 200 Internship:

1. Students may not receive credit for work done for pay.

2. One academic (elective) credit is equal to 45 hours worked.

3. The maximum number of credits you can earn in one semester is 3.0.

4. The maximum number of credits toward graduation you can receive from internships is 6.0.

5. In most situations, you will receive pass/fail credit for an internship, rather than a letter grade.

6. The Learning Agreement must be filed and faculty approval must be obtained prior to beginning work at the internship site.
