Lynne Cooper Harvey American Culture Studies Scholars

The American Culture Studies Program at Washington University is happy to announce two new awards recognizing undergraduate excellence: the Lynne Cooper Harvey Scholar in American Culture Studies awards and the Lynne Cooper Harvey Undergraduate Writing Prize.

Three outstanding majors in American Culture Studies will be annually designated Lynne Cooper Harvey Scholars, a title they will hold through their remaining undergraduate career. Chosen in the fall semester of their junior year, Scholars will be mentored by Harvey Graduate Fellows, will serve during their senior year as discussion leaders in classes taught by American Culture Studies faculty, and will have tuition and travel expenses paid for a two week off-campus summer seminar. The third of these seminars, called “On Location: Pine Ridge, South Dakota ,” was held in May and June of 2008. Its focus was on Lakota culture as well as literature and the social, political, and environmental issues of the region.

Eligible undergraduates (American Culture Studies majors with a GPA of 3.25 or better) should request nomination from an AmCS faculty member with whom they have studied. Applicants also need to submit a letter of formal application explaining their qualifications and interest in the Scholars program, a paper submitted in a course they have taken for their AmCS major, and a second faculty letter of support.

The gift from Lynne Cooper Harvey that supports the American Culture Studies Scholars program, also funds an annual award—The Lynne Cooper Harvey Writing Prize--for outstanding writing in the area of American Culture Studies. The Prize of five hundred dollars will be awarded at the end of each academic year. Students will submit their nominated paper near the midpoint of the spring semester.
