Research Interests
Professor Allen's research focuses on three topics: the reciprocal relationship between cognition and physiology, the cognitive bases of peak performance, and the development of the psychosocial prerequisites of a democratic society. First, his efforts are directed toward remedying the misfortune that the contribution of physiological states to learning is rarely acknowledged by educators while physiologically oriented practitioners have been slow to integrate cognitive processes into their models of physiological dysfunction and their therapeutic protocols. Second, he continues to follow the evidence that self-regulation consists of a series of skills which can be learned and is the critical variable in attaining high levels of performance in most realms of human endeavor from school readiness to the upper reaches of academic, athletic, and professional achievement. Third, he examines the continuing struggle to maintain democracy within our own shores.
