Four speakers examine the concept and practice of mercy
This popular seminar series hosted by University College kicks off again this month. Last year’s series examined “The Value of Justice”; this year the focus will be on justice’s frequent partner, complement, or antithesis: Mercy. Four speakers consider the concept and practice of mercy from several disciplinary directions, including politics, medicine, religious studies, and literature. The lectures are offered free of charge and online registration is requested. Saturdays, 11:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Douglas W. Knox has been named assistant director of the Humanities Digital Workshop in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis. Knox, most recently director of publication and digital initiatives for the Newberry Library in Chicago, began his position in November 2011.

In October 2011, Washington University celebrated the centennial of Washington University alumnus Thomas Lanier "Tennessee" Williams' birth. As part of a program of events to commemorate the artist, Arts & Sciences recorded an interview with Henry Schvey, professor of drama and comparative literature. The 12-minute video includes scenes from Schvey's interview and lecture about Williams' life, along with images and audio of the playwright reading from his work.
