VILLAGE INDIA PROGRAM 2008

About the Program

In summer 2007 the Department of Anthropology is starting a unique six-week study abroad program in rural Andhra Pradesh, India. This program is designed for self-starter students with an interest in experiencing village life in India, in exploring anthropological research in the field, and in service-learning through teaching in an Indian classroom. Based at the Pai Junior College (run by the Hyderabad-based Rural Development Foundation) students will participate in research projects (designed by the student, albeit with guidance from Washington University faculty), will teach a mini course to high school students, and will study local language and culture for a total of five Washington University credits. Students will be housed at the school.

The VIP will run from the last week of June through the first week of August. Application forms and other information is available here. Application deadline in 1 February, with interviews occurring the followinjg week.

Some financial aid will be available, but interested students may want to be considering funding strategies. To begin with, see StudLife 2 Nov 2007, Summer Grant Opportunities Top 100k
