Timucuan women bringing fish and agricultural produce into town. The Timucuan lived in palisaded villages in 16th Century north-central Florida, practicing extensive agriculture and foraging (hunting, gathering and fishing).

Recent research indicates that indigenous Florida populations made little use of maize until contact. Missionization promoted increased reliance on maize cultivation and less on foraging, which led to a clear decline in quality of life (Hutchinson et al. 1998, Regional Variation in the Pattern of Maize Adoption and Use in Florida and Georgia, Amer. Antiquity 63:397-416).
