Three Questions for a Maple

Víctor Rodríguez Núñez
Translated by Jerry Harp

I shouldn't understand
the feeling of the autumn rain
that has whipped you at dawn
and ripped off your leaves

And even less decipher
what that insolent wind says to you
when it shakes your trunk
with which you amazed us yesterday

Above all
        disregard what you think
maple of the gray squirrels
of the rain of the wind of me

Tres Preguntas a un Arce

No debiera entender
el sentido de esa lluvia de otoņo
que te ha azotado al alba
y arrancado estas hojas

Y menos descifrar
lo que te dice ese viento insolente
cuando estremece el tronco
con que ayer asombrabas

Sobre todo
        ignorar lo que piensas
arce de ardillas grises
de la lluvia del viento y de mí
