Student Docents Talk Art With Freshmen
The Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum encourages students to join the Student Docent Program and to help reopen the museum in fall 2006. The Student Docent Program is a great way to broaden a student’s knowledge of art and art history, share that knowledge with the public and other students, gain communication and public speaking skills, and become more involved with the exhibitions and distinguished collections of the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum. Since its founding in 2000, docents have led tours for elementary, junior high and high school students, college and university students, retirees, and many others. Student docents are an important part of the museum’s outreach efforts as they provide a positive, rewarding experience for visitors and help members of the larger community learn about Kemper Art Museum activities and resources. Several former students have credited their docent experience with giving them an edge in looking for art and museum jobs after graduation. Former docents are currently working at Art in America, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Pace Prints.
Students do not need any special museum experience to become a docent. The only qualifications are enthusiasm for art, an eagerness to share their knowledge and excitement with others, and an ability to work with a wide range of people. Knowledge of art history, studio art, teaching or public speaking is desirable but certainly not mandatory. Those interested in learning more about the Student Docent Program should contact Stephanie Parrish, Education Coordinator, at 314-935-7918 or Stephanie_Parrish@wustl.edu
