Celebrations

On May 10, 2007, the Department of Art History and Archaeology celebrated the eight-year long tenure of Professor William E. Wallace, Barbara Murphy Bryant Distinguished Professor of Art History, as Chair of the Department. We began with a surprise viewing of some of Professor Wallace’s favorite Old Master prints in the collection of the St. Louis Art Museum (he was surprised!). We continued with an open-air reception, where Professor Wallace and his wife Elizabeth Fagan were presented with a turn-of-the-century print by Ernest Roth of a street scene in Rome. The past eight years have been a critical time in the Department’s growth. Under Professor Wallace’s leadership, the number of majors and graduate students in the Department almost doubled, and he saw us through the completion of the ambitious building campaign that resulted in our new home in the Kemper building of the Sam Fox School of Design and Visual Arts. He continues his leadership role now on a more national level, as he has just been elected to the national board of the College Art Association.

Professor Wallace takes in the surprise! Dr. Judith Mann, Washington University alumna and Curator of Early Modern Art at the St. Louis Art Museum, applauds.

Dr. Francesca Consagra, Curator of Prints, Drawings and Photographs at the St. Louis Art Museum, shows off museum highlights. Professor Emeritus (and former Art History chair) Mark Weil sits at the right.

The crowd joins in a toast.

Professor Derek Hirst (History) and Dean Jeff Pike (College of Art) help Professor Wallace celebrate.

A Great Afternoon!

In Spring 2008, we plan to observe the Centenary of the Department, which began offering courses at Washington University in 1907-1908. Plans will be posted on these pages in months to come.
