GRADUATE STUDY ABROAD IN  TAIWAN

TAIWAN MINISTRY OF EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIPS
FOR STUDY IN TAIWAN

Each year the Taiwan Ministry of Education provides 1-3 scholarships to Washington University graduate students who wish to study Chinese language and culture in Taiwan. These scholarships provide tuition and a modest monthly stipend; students must cover costs of transportation to and from Taiwan, food, books, etc. (Please note that citizens of the Republic of China, overseas Chinese, or students of Chinese heritage are not eligible to apply for this particular scholarship).

Most students who apply for this scholarship attend the Center of Chinese Language and Culture (CCLC) — previously known as Mandarin Training Center — at National Taiwan Normal University. The academic year at CCLC is run on a quarterly schedule: students on scholarship must attend a minimum of three quarters, normally from September 1 to May 24. However, students may also request that the scholarship be used to study at other approved institutions in Taiwan, such as the International Center for Chinese Language (ICCL).

ELIGIBILITY:

Students wishing to apply for this scholarship must:
 

1) Have at least 1 year of formal Chinese language study: two years is recommended.
2) Be currently enrolled in a Washington University graduate program in Chinese or East Asian Studies (incl. the JD/MA and JD/MBA program)
OR
3) Be accepted into a Washington University graduate program either in East Asian Studies or (incl. the JD/MA and JD/MBA program) Chinese and planning to return to St. Louis after their year in Taiwan.
OR
4) Have graduated with either a B.A. or M.A. in Chinese or East Asian Studies the same year application is made. Preference will be given to those students (incl. the JD/MA and JD/MBA program) who plan to continue their graduate education or professional training in areas where they will utilize their Chinese language skills.
APPLICATION MATERIALS:

Students wishing to apply for this scholarship will need to submit the following materials:

Application for Admission Form
 

1) Photocopy of diploma and copy of complete school transcript

2) Two letters of recommendations (including a letter of recommendation from a Chinese language instructor assessing the student’s Chinese language ability.

3) Health certificate (including the results of a blood test showing that the applicant is free from infectious disease, incl. HIV)

4) Study plan written in English and, if possible, in Chinese.
