DECLARING A MAJOR IN EDUCATION

We strongly encourage you to declare the major by the end of your second year, and schedule a meeting with a department advisor by the end of your second year. Due to the complexity of state certification requirements, it is difficult if not impossible to complete the B.A. in four years without starting coursework at the beginning of the third year.

Declaration of a major with the College of Arts and Sciences does not guarantee admission to our teacher education program. To declare a major in education the student must complete the following steps:

  • Obtain a declaration of major form from the College of Arts and Sciences or the Department of Education office (McMillan Hall, Room 216). The student must complete the form and obtain the appropriate signatures including permission of the department of the second major.
  • All Department of Education majors are required to double major in a content area (for secondary and middle school certification) or a closely related department (for elementary certification).
  • Submit official transcripts from all colleges attended so that we can calculate your GPA. We require a 2.8 overall GPA, and a 3.0 GPA in courses taken in your second major department.
  • Submit your standardized test scores (SAT or ACT)
  • Submit a passing CBASE score
  • Submit a personal essay, which is used both of an indicator of dispositions for teaching and an assessment of written communication skills.
  • Meet for an interview with a department professor.
