TEACHER EDUCATION

What makes a teaching degree from Washington University unique? The education department has positive, strong relationships in the schools. They have a well-earned reputation for producing knowledgeable, reflective teachers that are dedicated to serving all students.  All students learn to conduct research in their own classrooms and conduct video analysis as part of their professional preparation. They receive extensive mentoring during their field experiences and collaborate with peers and other teachers to learn tools of inquiry.  With extensive experience in research in diverse school settings, students in our Teacher Education Programs graduate with the commitment and competencies to become teacher leaders in their schools and communities.

The department offers three undergraduate degrees that lead to teacher certification (see below). Students interested in eventually pursuing a degree in teaching may instead apply to a Master's degree program (see below) in the fall of their senior year.

Elementary Teacher Certification
Middle School Teacher Certification
Secondary Teacher Certification

Certification in Deaf and Hearing Impaired Education can be obtained through completion of a Masters of Science Degree. For more information, click here.

If you are thinking about declaring an education major at Washington University, you need to contact the Department of Education student services office at (314) 935-6791 as soon as possible, preferably by the end of your second year.

The department offers four Master's degree programs:

Master of Arts in Teaching (for secondary certification)
Master of Arts in Education (for elementary certification)
Master of Arts in Education, Innovative Teacher Certification (part-time program for uncertified in-service teachers)
Master of Arts in Education in Instructional Processes (part-time program for in service teachers)

Finally, the department offers a part-time non-degree program for those who have a bachelor's degree in a field other than education. This post-baccalaureate program leads to teacher certification in the state of Missouri.
