Community Connections Programs

The English Language Programs facilitate student connections with members of the St. Louis community by matching students with volunteers who are interested in meeting internationals. Full-time students or scholars may sign up for one of the programs below. Because there are a limited number of volunteers, spouses of full-time students or scholars are not eligible to sign up for a volunteer. Also, because the program is based on volunteer time, it runs only from the beginning of Fall semester (September) to the end of Spring semester (May). If you sign up for a volunteer after about March of any year, you will be placed on a wating list and matched in September.

SPEAK ENGLISH WITH US
Speak English With Us (SEWU) is a program in which community volunteers meet with a student one hour a week for casual conversation and mutually rewarding cultural exchange. Meetings may take place on campus, at a home, at a supermarket or department store...the possibilities are endless.

THE HOST FAMILY PROGRAM
The Host Family Program allows students to become unofficial “ambassadors of goodwill” whenever they are invited to a once a month family (or singles) event. Students have their own apartment and do not room with the families. The nature of your participation depends upon your own interests and those of your assigned family. Museums, campus events, informal tours of St. Louis and its “happenings” are enhanced when seen through the eyes of others!
