Washington University in St. Louis
English Language Program
Fall 2011 Testing Schedule
Incoming undergraduate students:
See the Writing 1 web site for information about the Washington University Writing Placement Exam.
Incoming graduate students:
To ensure your success during your academic career at WUSTL, your department/school may request that you take one or more English language proficiency exams. A letter sent with your visa documents indicates which exam, if any, your school/department requires you to take. As a follow-up to the TOEFL or other standardized English proficiency tests you may already have taken, the ELP's English proficiency exams will determine whether you need further English language support in order to fully engage with your academic program and the university community. Your department/school may require you to follow any ELP course recommendations that result from your performance on the exam(s).

Questions?
If you have any questions about the testing process that the information on this web site does not address, please contact the ELP at 935-5910 or esl@artsci.wustl.edu. You may find the information that you need on this site's pages about the English Language Programs' Tests or Frequently Asked Questions about ELP Testing and Placement (pdf).
Additional exams administered by the WU ELP include:
ELP TA Exams (for prospective teaching assistants).
Some departments have their graduate students take the ELP TA Exam instead of the Graduate Listening/Speaking Exam as soon as they arrive on campus. Other departments have students take the ELP TA Exams during their first year of graduate study. Times and dates for ELP TA Exams are arranged with the ELP by each department. Check with your department to find out its usual timeline for the TA Exam, ELP coursework (if needed), and the start of TA duties. See the complete ELP TA Exam information.
