Fall 2008 Testing Schedule

Incoming undergraduate students: See the Writing 1 web site for information about the Washington University Writing Placement Exam.

Incoming graduate students: To assure your success during your academic career at Washington University, your department/school may have requested that you take one or more of the English language proficiency exams listed below. You should have received a letter indicating which exam(s) your school/department wants you to take.

Composition proficiency exams and standard oral proficiency exams will be given Tuesday, August 19. For the composition exam, go directly to the exam location, January Hall Room 110, on the day of the exam. For the standard oral proficiency exam, sign up for a twenty-minute appointment when you first check in at the Office for International Students and Scholars. Report to the lounge on the west end of the second floor in Eads Hall 10 minutes before your scheduled time.

Graduate Composition Exam The graduate composition exam is a two-hour written exam. For more information about the composition proficiency exam, see the section on the English Language Program's Tests on this web site.

Standard Oral Exam The standard oral exam is a 20-minute interview. You can sign up for an interview appointment when you sign in at Stix International House on your arrival or during the Composition Exam. Institutional TOEFL Please note that the Institutional TOEFL will not be offered. If a student does not have a TOEFL score, he/she should take the composition placement exam or take the International TOEFL offered locally at the Sylvan Learning Center on Lindbergh Boulevard.

ELP TA Exams (for prospective teaching assistants) Time and place are arranged by each department; see the complete ELP TA Exam information.

If you have any questions about which test(s) your school/department wants you to take or about the testing process in general, please contact a member of the English Language Program faculty at the Office for International Students and Scholars in Stix International House (935-5910). Please bring a photo identification (e.g. passport or driver's license) to the exam(s) and be prepared to present it to the exam proctor(s).

Exam Results: Results of the exams are faxed to your department and should be given to your advisor so that if you need to take an English Language Program course, you can decide with him or her which one fits into your schedule.
