Professor Schwarz is the recipient of 1986 Eichendorff Prize, Austrian medal of Honor for Art & Science, Alexander von Humboldt Scholarship Prize. ACLS, DAAD, Fulbright, Guggenheim, and NEH fellowships. His publications include Hofmannsthal und Calderon (1962), Joseph von Eichendorff (1972), Das verschluckte Schluchzen-Poesie und Politik bei Rainer Maria Rilke (1972), an autobiography titled Keine Zeit für Eichendorff (1979), and two collections of essays: Dichtung, Kritik und Geschichte and Literatur aus vier Kulturen. He has edited and coedited numerous volumes on German literature and published articles on Ebner-Eschenbach, Saar, Thomas Mann, Schnitzler, Hesse, Delius, Exile, Jewish culture. He has been a reviewer for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and a visiting scholar at the universities of Hamburg, Tübingen, Siegen, Graz, Ohio State, Kansas, Oregon, California-Berkeley, California-Irvine, Princeton, Otago, New Zealand, and the Center for Interdisciplinary Studies, Bielefeld. Interests include Austrian literature, 19th-century literature, fin-de-siècle, modern literature, Märchen, and utopia.
