DEPARTMENT SCHOLASTIC / STUDY ABROAD AWARDS

The David Bronsen Prize for Excellence in German Studies was established to honor Professor David Bronsen, a distinguished scholar, teacher, and long-time member of the German Department. The prize is awarded to a graduating German major on the basis of excellent German language skills and superior academic achievement. The award is monetary and is sometimes shared by two students.

The Achievement in German Prize is awarded to a graduating German major on the basis of overall excellence in German studies and extra-curricular involvement in departmental activities, such as Delta Phi Alpha, German Day, and Deutscher Abend. The award is a book prize.

The Cecilia L. Hospes Scholarship is a substantial monetary award given to a promising junior or senior for study abroad.

study abroad scholarships of $1,000 each are awarded each year by the department to five qualified students wishing to study abroad.

DELTA PHI ALPHA, THE GERMAN NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY

The department strongly encourages students to join Delta Phi Alpha, the German National Honorary Society. This organization hosts monthly social events/study breaks for its members and provides guidance for those interested in improving their German and knowledge of German culture. Students are eligible to join if they have at least two years of university-level German courses (300 and higher) or their equivalent; a minimum overall GPA of 3.0; a minimum German GPA of 3.5; and a continued interest in the study of German language and culture. THE RAOUL WALLENBERG PRIZE FOR EXCELLENCE IN SWEDISH STUDIES

The Raoul Wallenberg Prize for Excellence in Swedish Studies was established in 2005 with the help of a development grant from the Swedish Institute, in honor of the memory of humanitarian activist Raoul Wallenberg. The purpose of the prize is to promote interest in Swedish studies, support intercultural understanding, and recognize outstanding student achievement. The prize is awarded to an undergraduate who has completed four semesters of Swedish language, on the basis of superior academic achievement, coupled with a demonstrated enthusiasm for extra-curricular program activities and/or efforts for further study in Swedish. The award amount is $100.

HONORS/AWARDS RECEPTION

At the end of every year, the department celebrates the acheivements of its undergraduates with a catered Undergraduate Awards reception at the Whittemore House. For more information, please contact Amanda Barton.

STUDY ABROAD FUNDING - OUTSIDE AGENCIES

Besides The Cecilia L. Hospes Scholarship and the department's Study Abroad Scholarships, financial support for study abroad from outside agencies is also available. Our students are strongly encouraged to apply for these scholarships, as past students have often been successful in receiving such funding.
