. Day 4: Using Technology for Classroom Presentations

Today's workshop addresses the fundamental challenge of introducing new kinds of presentation-based technologies into the classroom. We've already discussed the ways that learning and teaching styles can impact course design and instruction, but today's workshop takes this idea one step further as we discuss the particular ways in which one specific, commonly-used software application, Microsoft's PowerPoint, affects the way that we present information to students. We will first look at the basic features of the software and ways of integrating an electronic presentation seamlessly into the overall structure of a class. We will also, however, examine PowerPoint more critically, paying particular attention to the arguments made by informational design expert Edward Tufte in his essay "The Cognitive Style of PowerPoint." Our focus throughout this day's workshop will be on making effective and substantive use of technology inside the classroom, not merely using the technology for its own sake.
