Can courses taken at Washington University through Summer
School or University College count toward the major or minor
in IAS? |
| |
|
| |
Yes. As with regular semester day courses, these courses must be graded rather than pass/fail or credit/no credit. We allow only one such course per semester or summer, however, and no more than 9 units total from outside the day school are allowed. No additional paperwork is necessary to count these courses toward the major or minor.

Can I take language courses Pass/Fail or Credit/No Credit
to fulfill my language requirement? |
| |
|
| |
You are encouraged to take these courses for a grade, but,
in consultation with your advisor, in certain special cases,
language courses may be taken Pass/Fail or Credit/No Credit.
Do not assume permission to do this until you have consulted
with your advisor. Language courses taken while studying abroad
will be recorded on your WU transcript as Credit/No Credit.

| 3) |
Can I double-count courses counting toward my IAS major
or minor with another major or minor? |
| |
|
| |
No. You must have 18 units of advanced coursework (300 level
or above) distinct to each of your majors and 12 units distinct
to each of your minors (may be both introductory and advanced)
whether in Arts and Sciences or in another school. Language
courses taken to fulfill your language requirement for IAS may
count toward another major or minor unless they are, in certain
special cases, being counted toward your major requirement (see
EAS).

| 4) |
Are both Crossing Borders I and II required of all majors? |
| |
|
| |
All majors must enroll in both Crossing Borders I and II.
In very rare instances, a major may petition the IAS Program
Committee to have a particular introductory course waived. For
information on this petition process, contact Dr. Priscilla
Stone at pstone@wustl.edu.

Can courses taken abroad count toward the IAS major or

IAS majors and minors are encouraged to study abroad. You
may count up to 6 units toward your major requirements from
a semester abroad and up to 9 units from a year abroad. Minors
may count up to 3 units from a semester abroad and up to 6 units
from a year abroad. Please consult the Study Abroad Advisor
for IAS, Dr. Priscilla Stone at pstone@wustl.edu
as early as possible about study abroad plans.

Must I register through the IAS number (L97) to get credit
toward my IAS major or minor even if a course is home-based
in another department? |
| |
|
| |
We ask you to enroll through the IAS course number to better
ensure that all of the courses you intend to count toward your
major or minor will be properly credited.

| 7) |
Can I count a course towards my IAS major if it is not
cross-listed with IAS? |
| |
|
| |
There may be occasional courses that are very appropriate
to the IAS major or minor which were overlooked in the cross-listing
procedure. It is very important that you consult with your advisor
before enrolling in such courses, since you will require his/her
approval to count this course toward your major or minor.

| 8) |
Can I use two different languages to satisfy my language
requirement? |
| |
|
| |
You are encouraged to study more than one language at WU,
but it is assumed that you will satisfy your requirement by
demonstrating competence in at least one language through the
fourth semester. For more details on the language requirement,
please consult the descriptions of the various concentrations.

| |
|

Must I take Crossing Borders I before I take Crossing Borders
II? |
| |
|
| |
No.
These courses are not in sequence.

| 11) |
Will both Crossing Borders I and II be offered every semester? |
| |
|
| |
Not always. You can depend on Crossing Borders I being offered
every fall and Crossing Borders II being offered every spring.
You are strongly encouraged to take both by the end of your
sophomore year. If you are anticipating studying abroad the
spring of your junior year, taking Crossing Borders II in the
spring of your sophomore year, and Crossing Borders I the fall
of your junior year is another possible strategy.

| 13) |
Are there any grants available for study abroad or research? |
| |
|
| |
Yes. Please consult our website (www.artsci.wustl.edu/~ias/grants.html) for a list of options available to you to help support study abroad (such as NSEP and Gilman scholarships) or for research opportunities after graduation (such as Fulbright and DAAD). Also listed are many internship and volunteer options. Of particular interest to IAS majors should be the International Activities Fund: a $1000 scholarship for A&S undergrads who demonstrate a strong commitment to international activities in a variety of fields. Especially encouraged is international field research leading to a senior honors thesis, but other activities such as international or internationally-focused internships, assisting with faculty research overseas, or special language study will also be considered. Please contact Toni Loomis at 935-5073 for an application form. Deadline: March and November of each year.
