Is There a Global Culture?
Course Code: L97 170
MWF 1pm – 2pm
Prof. Seth Graebner
3 units
Is There a Global Culture?: The Seattle protestors and other opponents of globalization have made a great deal of the idea that a standardized, commercialized, and US-dominated culture is supplanting local cultures around the world. This, they assert, will make the world into a boring place in which local artists are squashed by nondescript cultural products distributed by an all-powerful American commercial machine. This course will question whether any such thing is happening, and will suggest that there are far more interesting ways of considering what ‘global culture’ might be. It will help provide you with the skills in cultural observation and interpretation necessary for informed leadership in the globalizing world.
