I used my ILP travel scholarship to travel to Tanzania with International Service Learning (ISL) on a service trip for pre-medical students. We worked with local doctors in three different villages in order to increase access to their services. Our participation also served to expose us pre-med students to practicing medicine in a low-income country, so that after medical training we would return to work. The program was two-pronged in each of the areas visited. Two days were spent traveling house to house to interview residents on their health and the health of their families. The second two days we spent operating a clinic with the doctors and nurses from nearby. The trip was a tremendous learning experience because not only did I see three very different settings in east Africa, but I also was able to witness and participate in the administration of public health programs in those areas.
