Linguistics

Linguistics at Washington University

Linguistics at Washington University is an interdisciplinary program. It provides students with the opportunity to take an introductory course in linguistics as well as advanced courses in syntax, semantics, phonology, computational linguistics, and historical linguistics. Through affiliated departments, students can also explore closely related areas such as psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, second language acquisition, and philosophy of language.

At Washington University, students may pursue their interests in linguistics in several ways. Most choose a minor in Linguistics, but many students have chosen to pursue a special major in linguistics. Linguistics courses are also part of several clusters that fulfill general education requirements in Arts and Sciences. Students may also pursue their interest in language by majoring in the Language, Cognition, and Culture track of the Philosophy–Neuroscience–Psychology program, pursuing a minor in Applied Linguistics, or studying in any of several language and literature programs in the College of Arts and Sciences.
