Hugh Macdonald is Avis H. Blewett Professor of Music. Before joining Washington University in 1987 he was Gardiner Professor of Music at the University of Glasgow and before that he taught at both Cambridge and Oxford Universities. He holds a Ph.D. from Cambridge University. He has held visiting professorships at Indiana University, the University of Illinois, and in Paris and Melbourne. He was General Editor of the New Berlioz Edition, which completed publication of its series of 27 volumes in 2006. He has published three books on Berlioz and has worked extensively in French music, especially Berlioz, Bizet, and Massenet, also in Russian and Czech music. His Skryabin appeared in 1978, and he has published studies of Mozart, Schubert, Liszt, Janácek and others. He has translated a number of operas in singing versions for the English National Opera, Opera Theatre of St. Louis, and other companies. He is a regular pre-concert speaker for the St. Louis and Boston Symphony Orchestras, and has broadcast on musical topics in England, France, and Australia.     Click for a bibliography.
