The Role of Study Abroad Advisors

Each department or program within the College of Arts and Sciences has been asked to appoint a Study Abroad Advisor (SAA). In consultation with other departmental faculty members, this person will develop policies and guidelines for study abroad relevant to their field. More specifically, each SAA is asked to:

  • Act as the point of contact for students, faculty, and the Office of International and Area Studies for information regarding study abroad opportunities that are appropriate for the majors (and minors) within the department.
  • Inform and advise individual students as they plan to study abroad, while they are abroad, and upon return, including preliminary approval of the study plan and evaluation of the completed course work, leading to award of WU credit.
  • Help set departmental policies and guidelines regarding study abroad options, performance expectations (including the portfolio/project requirement), and integration with major (and minor) requirements.

The Role of Study Abroad Liaisons

Most of the study abroad programs offered by the College of Arts and Sciences have a WU faculty member who acts as the primary link between the College and the program sponsor and/or foreign institution.

  • The liaison focuses on developing and maintaining institutional relationships, especially academic relationships. Periodic visits to the program site are expected to facilitate communication and program evaluation.
  • The liaison acts as an informational resource for SAA's and students who are interested in the program.
  • The liaison is involved in preparing participants for departure, resolving problems that may occur while the program is in progress, and welcoming and debriefing students upon their return.
  • The liaison advises the Study Abroad Advisory Board regarding the suitability and quality of the program and consults with the Director of Overseas Programs regarding coordination, administration, and management of the program.
