WUCAS Fall Scholarships | WU Australia, Chile, and Spain Programs Fall 2010

In order to encourage fall semester study abroad on the Washington University programs in Chile, Australia and Spain, Overseas Programs in International and Area Studies is offering awards of between $1000 and $3000 for selected students. In each of these three programs, WU has a program director on-site, ample housing, and a curriculum that works in the fall semester for students in a variety of academic disciplines. Applications will be evaluated on the basis of financial need and academic merit, and applicants may be interviewed as part of the selection process.

The application is due on February 8, 2010 to Overseas Programs.

Benjamin A. Gilman Summer 2010 International Scholarships | Summer 2010

To be eligible for one of the 125 scholarships that will be awarded to students studying abroad during the Summer of 2010 (up to $5,000 with an average award of $3,000) applicants must be majoring in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Math (STEM) field and meet the following criteria: recipient of a Federal Pell Grant at the time of application or during the term of his/her study abroad program; applying to or has been accepted into a study abroad program eligible for credit by the student’s accredited institution of higher education in the U.S.; studying abroad for at least 28 days in one country in any country except Cuba or a country on the U.S. Department of State’s current Travel Warning list. Applicants are not required to study a STEM subject while abroad to be eligible for the scholarship.

Students are strongly encouraged to submit their applications during the first application cycle (by the October 6, 2009 deadline) to ensure timely notification of award. Applicants who miss the October 6, 2009 deadline can apply during the second award cycle (by the April 6, 2010 deadline), but will not be notified of their award status until the first week of May.

Rowe Summer Study Abroad Scholarships | Summer 2009

Overseas Programs is pleased to announce eight (8) $2500 Rowe Summer Study Abroad Scholarships for summer study abroad in 2009. The Rowe Summer Study Abroad Scholarships are competitive grants awarded to WU undergraduate students demonstrating a high level of financial need. Applicants must either select an approved ArtSci summer program, preferably outside Western Europe, or must successfully petition for an alternative program. Applicants must meet all prerequisites for study abroad, including a minimum 3.0 GPA and suitable academic preparation for the proposed program.

WU's Politics, Pluralities, Religion Summer Program in Paris | New Program Summer 2009

The Anthropology department has started a new program beginning in summer 2009 to Paris, France. The program runs from June 1-July 1, 2009. Students earn a total of six WU credits for taking two courses, “Politics and Religion in Contemporary Societies” and “Politics, Religion and Art in Antiquity: Representations in Paris”.

An additional scholarship opportunity is available only for students studying on the PPRI summer program. Two (2) $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to qualified applicants based on financial need and/or academic merit. Please submit a PPRI Scholarship application by February 23, 2009 to Overseas Programs.

WU Summer Chinese Language Program at Fudan University, Shanghai | New Program Summer 2009

The Chinese department has partnered with Fudan University in Shanghai, China to create a new WU summer study abroad program in China beginning in summer 2009. Students will receive 10 credits in Chinese for intensive Chinese language study.

C.V. Starr-Middlebury School at Alexandria University in Egypt | New Approved Program

Approved for students with at least four semesters of college-level Arabic prior to arrival in Egypt, Middlebury College encourages all undergraduate students to take full advantage of their experience abroad by participating in learning experiences outside the classroom. Students are provided with opportunities for volunteer work and cultural activities to deepen their social immersion in Egyptian culture, enhance their language skills, and gain a better understanding of present-day Egypt. There are approximately 15-20 students on the program per semester.

University of Edinburgh Parliamentary Internship Programme | New Approved Program

Approved for Political Science major of at least junior standing with a 3.0 GPA. The first five weeks focus on three classes, four hours each week, on 'British Politics', 'Scottish Politics', and 'Scottish Society and Culture'. After that, the interns spend 10 weeks in Parliament, working full-time with an MSP and his/her staff. Students must also complete a research project supervised by a member of the Scottish Parliament and an academic from the Institute of Governance.
