Money Matters

Finances are typically a major consideration of parents with students planning to study abroad. "How much will study abroad cost?" "Can my student use his or her financial aid award?" "To whom do I pay the program fees?" These are just a few of the pertinent questions parents will ask when discussing a study abroad program with the student or with an advisor in our office.

How much study abroad actually costs depends on a number of factors including the cost of travel, the cost of living at the destination and the spending habits of the individual involved. Given these variables, sometimes students pay more when studying abroad and sometimes less than they would at Washington University (WU). In the program information included on this web site and in orientation materials for the program, students and parents are advised as to the expected costs of the program. WU Arts & Science students who are eligible for financial aid can apply it to WU approved study abroad programs and in many instances students can also apply for additional institutional and external grants and scholarships.
