College Year in Athens

Areas of Study
Ancient Greek Civilization and East Mediterranean Area Studies. Courses are designed to accommodate varying levels of experience with these topics. Courses are taught at the CYA center.   The faculty is comprised of distinguished U.S. and European scholars.  The academic focus of the program is on ancient Greek civilization and Mediterranean studies. This program is appropriate for students majoring in Anthropology, Archaeology, Art History, Classics, History, and IPH.

Eligibility
Minimum 3.0 GPA. Applicant must have appropriate background of prior coursework or courses in progress for subject(s) to be studied in Greece.

WU Credits
WU students are required to take 5 courses for a total of 15 credits.

Location
Athens, Greece

Few cities hold so much historical importance as Athens. Home to about 3.5 million people, Athens remains the cultural and political center of Greece. Sites such as the Parthenon, the old University of Athens, the Acropolis, and Plato’s Academy are just a few students can take advantage during their time here. Large and cosmopolitan, the city offers students the opportunity to take advantage of the millennia of western tradition which makes Athens unique.

Housing
Students live together in apartment-style housing in a residential area 20 minutes (walking) from the academic center. The apartments are furnished. One main meal is provided Monday-Friday at the academic center. The apartment area has restaurants and stores within easy distance.

Student Life
The program organizes many student activities throughout the semester, such as field trips, cooking classes and special lectures. Students can perform in a play, run the marathon, or even go scuba diving. Student-initiated activities are also available, such as community service and travel.

On-Site Support
The program has service staff available to support the students with any problems, such as roommate issues or illness. There are also a financial aid officer, a study travel coordinator, academic planning, housing and food coordinator and other staff available on-site. The College Year in Athens Academic Center is located in the heart of Athens, next to the Athens Marble Stadium opposite the National Gardens.

Application Process
The application process differs based on the term in which you wish to study abroad and your department's approval of this program.

Semester/AY Applications - If this program is approved by your department you must submit a completed WU Semester/AY Study Abroad Application with program-specific forms to the Overseas Programs office in McMillan 138. If this program is not approved by your department, then you must meet with Jennifer White Reding before proceeding with your application.

Summer Applications - You must submit a completed WU Summer Study Abroad Application with program-specific forms to the Overseas Programs office in McMillan 138. If you wish to receive major or minor credit, please ensure that this program is approved by your department and you complete the Study Plan with your Study Abroad Advisor.
