Location
Nairobi is the capital city of Kenya and has the highest population in East Africa, with an estimated population of between 3 and 4 million. Since its foundation as a railway camp in 1899, Nairobi has grown to become the largest city in Kenya, and one of the largest cities in Africa. Nairobi is a cosmopolitan and multicultural city, with many immigrants from former British colonies. This is highlighted in the number of churches, mosques and temples within the city.

Housing
Students live in a dormitory in a suburb of Nairobi and have periodic family homestays in Kenyan villages. The dormitory/program center houses faculty and staff as well as the students, and the center provides linens and two meals a day. There is a program bus to the city center.

Student Life
Students learn in the classroom, field, during homestays, internships and independent study. Students go on two two-week field trips emphasizing cultural and environmental development. Though the program is based in Nairobi, students will become familiar with the surrounding rural areas. A Kiswahili language course is mandatory to facilitate immersion.

On-Site Support
St. Lawrence University faculty are in charge of the program, and the St. Lawrence University Study Center is located on 5 1/2 acres in the Nairobi suburb of Karen, eight miles from the city center. Transportation to and from the city is also provided by program vehicles. The program's academic and administrative directors and the assistant director -- and their families -- live on the property and are easily accessible.
