Areas of Study
Women’s studies, philosophy, film and media, history, law, science, and liberal arts in general (especially within Utrecht University College honors program, modeled on an American liberal arts college)

Utrecht University College, with very limited capacity for visiting students, runs on a different calendar from the main university, more closely resembling WU’s calendar, so either semester may be possible for qualified students.

Note:  Most courses taught in English are referred to as certificate courses;  see also the courses offered by  James Boswell Institute (especially the exchange student welcome course) and Utrecht University College.

Eligibility
3.0 GPA with a strong background in the area of study (3.3+ gpa for Utrecht University College). Capacity is limited to balance enrollment of Utrecht exchange students at WU and by the availability of student housing for visiting students in Utrecht.

WU Credits
15-16 units per semester. 2 ECTS (European Community Course-Credit Transfer System) units usually equal 1 WU unit.

Location
Utrecht , Netherlands

Located in the heart of the Netherlands, Utrecht is one of the original city states of Europe. Utrecht University in one of the oldest universities in Europe and has developed into a large and prominent institution of research and education.

Housing
Housing within Utrecht is tight, therefore the International Office places exchange students in student accommodations according to preferences and availability. (Utrecht University College, however, provides in-college room and board for all its students). The summer school provides similar housing assistance.

Student Life
There are many student organizations in Utrecht students can join. Some focus on offering social activities while others center around religion, sport, or shared cultural interest (singing, photography). Most departments have their own student organization, which, besides organizing social activities, also organize field trips within the Netherlands.

Utrecht has approximately 300,000 inhabitants, which makes it the fourth largest city in the Netherlands. Its location in the center of the country makes it a hub of activities year-round. It has the largest shopping mall in the country. The excellent railway network takes you to Amsterdam in 30 minutes, Cologne in 2 hours, Brussels in 2½ hours, or Paris in 4 hours.

Application Process
The application process differs based on your department's approval of this program.

If this program is approved by your department you must submit a completed WU Semester/AY Study Abroad Application with program-specific forms to the Overseas Programs office in McMillan 138. If this program is not approved by your department, then you must meet with Jennifer White Reding before proceeding with your application.
