Eligibility
Students applying for Fall study must have completed Spanish 307D and 308D. Spring applicants must also have completed at least one literary survey (330C, 333C, 334C, 335C, or 336C) with a grade of B- or above in order to be eligible for the program. It is useful, but not necessary, to have taken one conversation class or to have had a prior study abroad experience. A minimum GPA of 3.0 or above is also required at the time of application.
WU Credits
Generally, students are awarded 15-16 WU credits upon the completion of the semester program and up to 33 WU credits for the academic year. All students must take a minimum of 12 WU credits through Carlos III per semester. Washington University offers a 3-week intensive language course prior to the opening of Carlos III classes that provides an additional 3 credits.
Location
Madrid, Spain
The Carlos III program is based in Madrid, Spain’s capital city, but begins with intensive language training in Sevilla and Barcelona. Upon completion of the intensive language program, students reside in Madrid and commute to the Universidad Carlos III in the nearby suburb of Getafe .
Housing
Students are housed with Spanish hosts in Madrid proper. Through this arrangement, students have the opportunity to experience greater linguistic and cultural immersion than a residence hall would provide, as well as benefiting from the vibrant social and cultural life of urban Madrid.
Student Life
Students have a wide variety of cultural offerings available to them while living in Madrid. In addition to the opportunity to take some courses alongside native Spaniards, students will be introduced to Spain’s multitude of local festivals, important cultural and historical sites, gorgeous countryside (such as Cataluña, Andalucía, or Asturias) and elegant cuisine. Madrid is also well-known for its vibrant nightlife and extensive artistic and cultural opportunities.
On-Site Support
The Washington University students at Carlos III have their own resident director who will help them to select courses, register, learn to use library and other campus services, and will assess their progress and needs in the courses taken, conferring with the Carlos III faculty and staff regularly. The director also helps them renew their visas, helps them become familiar with parts of Madrid, and organizes day trips and longer excursions.
