Enrollment Opportunities
Course Offerings (current offerings)

Each semester's course offerings in Philosophy are listed, along with the offerings of other departments in Arts and Sciences, in a pamphlet entitled Course Listings, available each April for the following fall semester's courses, and each November for that spring's courses. In addition to identifying the coming term's Philosophy offerings, the booklet contains detailed descriptions of planned course contents, and often lists the texts that will be used in a given course. For a more comprehensive listing, which contains all courses offered by the Department, including those that will not be offered in the coming term, see the Bulletin of Washington University, Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. Seminars

Many of the courses offered in the Department take the form of seminars (this is especially true of courses numbered at the 500 level). Enrollment in seminars is limited and students are responsible for a number of seminar presentations.

Other enrollment opportunities

Students whose philosophical work leads into areas not covered by courses or seminars may earn credit for such work by arranging a tutorial, directed reading, or independent studies course. Two or three such graduate students may request a faculty member to conduct a tutorial for them as a group. A single student who wishes to work independently should ask an appropriate faculty member to guide directed reading or independent study. The Department encourages students to take advantage of these opportunities for individualized instruction, especially late in their graduate careers when their interests have become relatively specialized.

Interdisciplinary Opportunities--before The Disssertation or after.

The Women and Gender Studies Graduate Certificate Program offers graduate students the opportunity to broaden their course work to include the interdisciplinary study of gender and feminist theory. Students who complete the certificate have the option, on recommendation of the department chair and/or director of graduate studies, to participate in a joint TAship between the department and the Women and Gender Studies Program.
