JOYCE TREBILCOT was appointed as a regular member of the department in 1970. She received her Ph.D. from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1970 with a dissertation titled First Problems in Emotion, directed by Alex Sesonske. Professor Trebilcot was co-founder of the Washington University Women's Studies Program, and was its Coordinator from 1980 to 1992. She is active in the Society for Women in Philosophy. She taught as a visiting professor at the University of New Mexico and at Wheaton College in Massachusetts. She is author of Dyke Ideas: Politics, Process, Daily Life, of the pamphlet Taking Responsibility for Sexuality, and of many articles in feminist, lesbian, and philosophy publications. Her article, "Sex Roles: The Argument from Nature," has been reprinted 19 times. She is the editor of Mothering: Essays in Feminist Theory, and of a special issue of the Journal of Social Philosophy on Feminist Social Philosophy. She was a founder of Hypatia: A Journal of Feminist Philosophy, and has served on the editorial boards of Hypatia, Social Theory and Practice, and the Journal of Social Philosophy. She retired as Professor Emerita in 1995.
