Study abroad

Students interested in one semester study abroad options are urged to consider going abroad during the Fall semester of their junior year. Fall semester study abroad affords significant advantages over the spring semester, including better housing and course offerings.

Study Abroad at Edinburgh

The PNP program has a study abroad arrangement with the University of Edinburgh, which provides a useful pre-arrival guide for visiting students. Information likely to be especially useful for Washington University students is available on the Overseas Programs website.

Please note that you must submit all application materials to the Overseas Programs Office.

PNP students interested in spending a semester or a full academic year at the University of Edinburgh are encouraged to plan in advance with their PNP major adviser, with the PNP study abroad officer, John Heil (jh@wustl.edu), and with University of Edinburgh Coordinator in the Office of Overseas Programs.

Edinburgh offers a wide range of courses potentially of interest to PNP majors. The list below identifies some of these. You should note, however, that courses vary from year to year. There is no guarantee that particular courses on the list will be available in a given year.

Course transfer guidelines

The standard courseload at Edinburgh is 60 units per semester, typically made of courses that give either 10 or 20 units. This gives a transfer ratio of 1 WUSTL unit = 4 Edinburgh units. Washington University guidelines allow you to count a total of 15 WUSTL units (= 60 Edinburgh units) towards your degree requirements, of which the PNP program allows 9 units (= 45 Edinburgh units) towards the requirements of the major. You will need to discuss the details of how transfer courses might fulfill distribution requirements with your PNP major adviser and with the PNP study abroad officer, but as a guideline you may assume that a 3-unit PNP distribution requirement can be satisfied either by a suitable 20 unit Edinburgh course or by 2 appropriate 10 unit Edinburgh courses.

Study abroad at Universities other than the University of Edinburgh. PNP majors interested in studying philosophy, biology (neuroscience), or psychology in other University-approved programs, will need to (1) secure approval from the pertinent department (spaces are limited) and (2) apply in writing to the PNP Study Abroad Officer (see above). Applications will be assessed solely on their academic merits.
