Licensure

Percentage of students who graduated and then became licensed psychologists:

53% (includes those who passed licensing exams in various states, including Missouri, Wisconsin, Ohio, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Illinois, Rhode Island, California, and one Canadian province).

Student Characteristics:

With the large ratio of applicants to acceptances, many applicants are bound to be disappointed.  The applicant should be aware that his/her entire undergraduate record, test scores, and credentials will be appraised carefully and that those with excellent credentials have the best chance of being accepted.  The last five classes admitted to our Clinical Program have had a median GPA = 3.65.  The median scores for the Graduate Record Examination have been:  Verbal = 620; Quantitative = 690, Analytical = 710; Advanced Psychology Test = 680.  Students must have demonstrated research interests that are compatible with those of at least one core clinical faculty member and have strong letters of recommendation to be competitive for admission.

Each spring, five to six students are selected to begin graduate study in the fall.  Approximately 175 applications are received each year, and 20 of these applicants are invited for interviews during February.  Because of the rigorous selection process, it is expected that all students selected will complete their studies successfully.  Few students voluntarily withdraw or are asked to leave the program.   In the last six years, we have only lost 3% of our students.  The majority complete the doctoral program successfully  within six years.

More women than men enter the program but there is no selection policy regarding the ratio.  The age distribution ranges from 22 to 35 years.  Each class is composed of some students who are recent graduates and some who have worked for a number of years.   Diversity in age, experience, social class, race, sexual orientation, and religious background is valued as it contributes to the vitality of each class.  The program is eager to attract ethnic minority students and recognizes that traditional admissions criteria, particularly standardized tests, may not be as useful as other information in identifying talented ethnic minority applicants.  With the new handicapped accessible building, the program is eager to attract students with disabilities.
