LEFT: Pre-famous beats Jack Kerouac and Lucien Carr at the fountain on the Columbia campus, 1944.

RIGHT: Pre-famous Columbia junior faculty anthropologists Glenn Stone and David Koester at the same spot, 1992. Dave actually looks kind of like Lucien Carr, but there are lots of parallels between Kerouac and me. Our hair color for one, plus we both have beards, except for Kerouac. Kerouac hung out at The Gate on Broadway, scribbling notes that later became On The Road; I lived in an apartment over The Gate, scribbling notes that later became Settlement Ecology: The Social and Spatial Organization of Kofyar Agriculture. Life is a funny old dog.
