Henry B. Baumgardner, grandson of Captain John Baumgardner (1787-1853) and Margaret Rebecca Etter. Pictured here with his second wife, Nancy C. Cress, and grand daughter, Dolly. [Note: we previously listed him as the son of Capt. John but he is the grandson.]
  • Henry B. Baumgardner born 1 August 1825, Wytheville, Wythe Co., VA
  • Removed in 1845 or '46 to Long Hollow community (west of Pennington Gap), Lee Co., VA
  • Married Louisa Temple Calton (1), Nancy C. Cress (2), (born Smyth Co., VA), 20 June 1861, Lee Co., VA
  • Died 26 December 1911, Long Hollow, Lee Co., VA, buried in Shelbourne Cemetery.
  • Henry was very successful. He owned and operated a grist mill and carding mill, which were located directly across the road (Route 643) from his house. The mill has been rebuilt, by the current owner, as it had fallen into decay. The beautiful old house has been torn down. It was very large for its day, with porches all around on the first and second floors. Henry had the first telephone in all Lee Co., too.
Thanks to Nadine Baumgardner for photo and information.
