DEATHS
J. B. Baumgardner, familiarly called "Fatty," the venerable hotel-keeper of
Barboursville, died last Friday evening and the remains were interred Sunday, an
immense concourse of people following the remains to their last resting place. Mr.
Baumgardner was about seventy-five years of age, and came to this region from Wythe
county, Virginia. He was in good circumstances at one time and was one of the most
liberal hearted men. He was a witty old gentleman and always had a good word and a
joke for his visitors. During the war he acted as sheriff of the county and served
some time in the Federal army. He leaves a wife and four children to mourn his loss.
Rev. John Martin came down from East Bank to deliver the funeral sermon. Mr.
Baumgardner will be greatly missed at the ex-county seat, where he had been a
prominent figure for half a century.
