The School of Engineering and Applied Sciences has its own policy for how students satisfy the writing requirement. If you are entering the university in the School of Engineering, and if you are not seeking a dual degree in one of the other schools, please see the SEAS website for details on satisfying their requirement. If you are a dual degree student or if you are a current Engineering student transferring into one of the other schools, see information below.

Dual Degree Students in Engineering and Another School at WU

Students who pursue dual degrees in Engineering and Architecture, Art, Arts & Sciences, or Business must satisfy the requirement of both schools. Therefore, dual degree students who enter as freshmen must take Writing 1 to satisfy the University Writing Requirement. Dual degree students who enter as transfers must consult the guidelines for transfer students in non-Engineering schools and abide by all requirements/deadlines described there.

Students Transferring from Engineering to Another School at WU

Students who transfer out of Engineering into Architecture, Art, Arts & Sciences, or Business must satisfy the requirement of the new school. Therefore, they are placed according to the following guidelines:

For Students originally placed in preparatory courses:

Students in Engineering who were originally required to take preparatory classes (U15 ELP 1311, U15 ELP 1411, L13-1001) before entering L13-100 must complete the course sequence as outlined by Engineering placement. The writing requirement will be satisfied once the student passes L13-100.

For all other Students:

Students not required to take L13-100 (as Engineers) must take L13-100 to satisfy the writing requirement, during the first semester after they transfer. Students required to take L13-100 (as Engineers) must still take 100.
